Curly hair and we don’t care!

If you've ever wondered how to use a diffuser, you're not alone. A diffuser attachment is one of the best tools for enhancing natural curl patterns, reducing frizz, and creating more volume without disrupting your hair's texture.

Whether you have loose waves, tight coils, or somewhere in between, learning how to properly use a diffuser can help you achieve more defined curls while minimizing heat damage. When paired with the right hair dryer and heat setting, a diffuser helps dry hair evenly while maintaining your natural curl shape.

What Is a Diffuser Attachment?

A diffuser attachment is a bowl-shaped accessory that connects to your hair dryer and disperses airflow more evenly across your hair. Unlike direct airflow, which can create frizz and disrupt curl patterns, a diffuser helps gently dry hair while preserving natural texture and volume.

Many people with curly, wavy, or coily hair use a diffuser attachment to enhance definition and reduce frizz during the drying process.

How to Use a Diffuser Step by Step

Step 1: Start With Damp Hair

Apply your favorite curl cream, mousse, or leave-in conditioner to freshly washed hair. Your hair should be damp but not soaking wet before diffusing.

Step 2: Choose the Right Heat Setting

Select a low or medium heat setting depending on your hair type and texture. Lower temperatures can help reduce frizz and prevent excessive dryness while still allowing the diffuser to dry hair effectively.

Step 3: Section Your Hair

Divide your hair into sections to ensure even drying and curl definition.

Step 4: Cup Hair Into the Diffuser

Place sections of hair into the diffuser attachment and gently lift toward your scalp. Hold for 20–30 seconds before moving to another section.

Step 5: Continue Until Hair Is Mostly Dry

Repeat the process until your curls are about 80–90% dry. Allowing hair to air dry the rest of the way can help minimize frizz and maintain definition.

Common Diffuser Mistakes to Avoid

Do Not Brush Your Hair

Fight the urge! Your best results will come if you brush your hair well before you shampoo, or use a wide tooth comb before rinsing out your conditioner. After the shower, hang your head from side to side and gently scrunch with a towel to remove excess water. Make sure to towel dry it well, but never wait until parts of your hair have already dried. Those dry pieces will become fly aways and result in a frizzy looking finished hairstyle.

Don’t Stop At The Roots

Drying just the roots is pointless. Leaving all that water weight on the ends will just pull the curls flat again as they dry. this will cause saggy and lifeless curls. Once you have gently pressed the excess water out with a towel, use a similar scrunching technique with your curl definer/styling product, this will avoid the need to brush. Always start the diffusing process at the ends and work upwards s the hair dries. This allows the curls to spring up without the weight of the water pulling them down. To avoid fly-aways, make sure to always keep the nozzle of the dryer horizontal and not aiming up. If your hair is medium to long in length, it is best to start upside-down, then switch from side to side as you get closer to the roots. Be sure to NEVER comb through with your fingers while you are drying! Only use your hands to lift the ends of the hair and take weight off of the curls as they are drying.

As you get closer to the roots, use your hands to make a “claw” then make small circles on your scalp with your fingertips. This will encourage curl volume all the way to the roots. If you are using the SA Diffuser then it has “fingers” you can actually press directly against the scalp and use to do circles as you hang your head to one side and then the other. Once your hair is dry, grab an old fashioned plastic pick or wide tooth comb and loosely work through your hair. This will gently separate and soften the curls, giving them a modern finish.

Best Diffuser Techniques for Different Hair Types

Different hair types and curl patterns may require slightly different techniques.

Wavy Hair

Focus on lifting roots to create additional volume while maintaining soft definition.

Curly Hair

Diffuse in sections and avoid touching curls too frequently to help reduce frizz.

Coily Hair

Use lower heat settings and diffuse slowly to maintain moisture and definition.

Conclusion

Learning how to use a diffuser can completely transform your styling routine. By using the right diffuser attachment, selecting an appropriate heat setting, and following proper drying techniques, you can enhance natural curl patterns, reduce frizz, and create beautiful, voluminous curls for all hair types.

Whether your goal is defined ringlets, soft waves, or added root volume, a diffuser and quality hair dryer can help you achieve salon-worthy results at home.
