Choosing a flat iron

What is the difference between a titanium and a ceramic flat iron?

Titanium plates and ceramic plates both deliver even, consistent heat; the right choice depends on your hair and how you style. Our titanium irons, such as the Omega Infrared Titanium Flat Iron and the Nova 2" Infrared Titanium Flat Iron, are designed for thick, coarse, curly and textured hair. The Bionic Pro Ceramic Flat Iron has floating ceramic plates with Nano-Silver, Far Infrared and Negative Ion technology and suits everything from fine to coarse, textured hair.

What does an infrared flat iron do?

An infrared flat iron pairs heated plates with far infrared technology for smooth, glossy results. The Quantum Infrared Flat Iron uses real far infrared light with floating rose gold chrome plates, while the Omega and Nova pair far infrared with floating titanium plates. Read Infrared Hair Tools Explained to learn more about how the technology works.

Which flat iron is best for thick, coarse or curly hair?

For thick, long, coarse or hard-to-style hair, start with the Nova 2" Infrared Titanium Flat Iron, whose extra-wide floating titanium plates and adjustable digital temperature (up to 450°F) cover more hair per pass. The Omega is a lighter option for thick, coarse, curly and textured hair, with rounded edges and cool-touch tips. Our guide Best Flat Iron for Thick Hair walks through what to look for.

Should I choose a 1-inch or a 2-inch flat iron?

A 1-inch flat iron gives you more control at the roots, around the face and for curls, while a 2-inch flat iron covers more hair at once, which speeds up styling on long or thick hair. The 1" Hybrid Pro Titanium Flat Iron is our 1-inch pick, and the Nova is our 2-inch flat iron. For short hair, bangs and touch-ups, the 0.9" Ceramic Portable Straightener is even more compact.

Which flat iron is suited to silk presses and keratin treatments?

The Omega Infrared Titanium Flat Iron is designed with silk presses and keratin treatments in mind, and the 1" Hybrid Pro Titanium Flat Iron is suited to Brazilian keratin straightening thanks to its rapid-recovery ceramic heater. Both use floating titanium plates for even, one-pass styling.

Can I curl and wave my hair with a flat iron?

Yes. Rounded designs like the Bionic Pro Ceramic Flat Iron, Quantum and Nova are made to straighten, curl and wave. For a true two-in-one, the Infrared Breeze Air Styler Pro combines a flat iron and curler with cooling air vents that help set each section. See How to Curl Hair with a Straightener Like a Pro for technique.

Hot air straighteners & blow dryers

What is a hot air straightener?

A hot air straightener is a blow dryer and straightener in one tool, so it dries and smooths at the same time. Our Air Glide 2-in-1 Hot Air Straightener pairs a 110,000 RPM brushless motor with high-pressure, multi-angle airflow, three airflow speeds, Boost mode and a Cool Shot, plus adjustable heat from 176°F to 410°F (80–210°C).

Can I use the Air Glide on wet hair?

Yes, the Air Glide is designed for wet-to-dry styling on towel-dried hair, and it also refreshes dry hair. It works on any hair type and can create soft waves as well as sleek, straight styles.

What is an ionic hair dryer?

An ionic hair dryer releases negative ions as it dries, which helps reduce frizz and static for a smoother, shinier finish. The Salon Supersonic Breeze Digital Blow Dryer combines negative ions with ceramic and tourmaline technology, a 110,000 RPM brushless motor, digital temperature control and a self-cleaning filter.

Which attachments come with the Salon Supersonic Breeze?

The Salon Supersonic Breeze Digital Blow Dryer includes a concentrator, a diffuser and a curling attachment. It works on hair from fine to curly; for curl definition, see How to Use a Diffuser for Defined, Frizz-Free Curls.

Should I choose a blow dryer brush or a traditional hair dryer?

A blow dryer brush dries and styles in one step on towel-dried hair, which makes salon-style blowouts easier at home. Choose the 2in Infrared Air Styler for round-brush volume and soft waves, the Volumizer Pro 2.0 for a paddle-brush finish, or the Mini Air Styler for bangs, bobs and shorter cuts. Our at-home blowout guide compares the options.

Curlers, wands & wavers

How does an automatic hair curler work?

An automatic curler rotates the barrel for you, drawing in a section of hair and wrapping it into a curl at the press of a button. The Press n' Curl offers dual-direction rotation, and the Cosmo Automatic Hair Curler uses directional controls so you can curl toward or away from your face.

What is the difference between the Press n' Curl and the Cosmo?

The Press n' Curl uses infrared light with three heat settings from 320°F to 400°F, LED indicators and auto shut-off after one hour. The Cosmo comes with two interchangeable tourmaline barrels (3/4" and 1"), adjustable digital heat up to 410°F with an LCD display, and a 360° swivel cord.

Which curling wand barrel size should I choose?

Smaller barrels make tighter curls, and larger barrels make looser, more voluminous curls. Choose the 3/4" Pro Styling Wand for tight, defined curls, the 1" wand for versatile, beginner-friendly curls on short to long hair, or the 1.25" wand for voluminous curls and Hollywood waves on medium-to-long hair. The Pro Styling Wand Set includes 1.25", 1", 3/4" and Reverso barrels.

How do I use a clip-free curling wand safely?

Wrap a section of hair around the barrel, hold for a few seconds and release. Our Pro Styling Wands include a heat-resistant glove, so wear it on the hand that guides your hair. Our Quick Tips for Fast Hair Curling and curling tips for every hair type have more technique.

What does a hair waver do?

A hair waver presses hair between multiple barrels to create an even, beachy wave pattern. The Mermaid Waver has three tourmaline barrels with far infrared and ionic technology, rapid heat-up, a comfort grip and a cool tip. For more ideas, read Effortless Wavy Hair: Perfect Beach Waves Styling.

Straightening brushes

Is a straightening brush better than a flat iron?

A straightening brush is faster and gentler-feeling for everyday smoothing, while a flat iron gives a sleeker, more polished finish. Heated brushes like the Pro Glider 1.0 Straightening Brush detangle and straighten in one pass, which is ideal for quick routines. If you want glass-like straightness, a flat iron is the better choice.

What is the difference between the Pro Glider 1.0 and Pro Glider 2.0?

The Pro Glider 1.0 is a 4-in-1 heated straightening brush with ceramic heating and adjustable temperature, made for thick, coarse and frizz-prone hair. The Pro Glider 2.0 is a slimmer 4-in-1 heated styling comb that detangles, straightens, curls and massages the scalp. Both have a triangular design and a 360° swivel cord.

Can I use a straightening brush on short hair or bangs?

Yes. The triangular shape of the Pro Glider 2.0 works on short hair, long hair and bangs, and the Portable Glider is a travel-size heated styling comb with the same triangular shape.

Is there a heated straightening brush for beards?

Yes. The SA Macho 2.0 is a heated beard and hair straightening brush for fine to very thick beards, with adjustable heat, built-in temperature control and auto shut-off. Explore the full SA Macho collection for grooming essentials.

Heat & hair health

What temperature should I use on my hair?

Use the lowest temperature that styles your hair in one or two passes. Fine, thin or color-treated hair usually needs less heat, while thick, coarse or curly hair may need more. That is why our flat irons, curlers and dryers offer adjustable heat settings.

Do I need a heat protectant?

Yes, apply a heat protectant before any hot tool. Our Blow Out Spray doubles as a heat protectant before styling and adds volume, smoothness and shine. For finishing, the Revitalizing Moroccan Hair Serum smooths frizz and tames flyaways.

Can I heat style every day without damaging my hair?

You can minimize damage by using a heat protectant, choosing the lowest effective temperature and avoiding repeated passes on the same section. Giving hair heat-free days and keeping it conditioned also helps. Read 5 Ways to Avoid Heat Damage for more.

What do far infrared and negative ions do?

Far infrared and negative ion technology are designed to help hair look smoother and shinier with less frizz. Many of our tools combine them, including the Bionic Pro, Infrared Breeze, Pro Styling Wands and Mermaid Waver. Learn more in Far Infrared Heat & Hair.

Care, cleaning & safety

How do I clean my flat iron or curling wand?

Unplug the tool and let it cool completely, then wipe the plates or barrel with a soft, damp cloth to remove product buildup. Never submerge a hot tool in water. See How To Properly Care For Your Hair Tools for a full routine.

Which tools have auto shut-off?

The Press n' Curl shuts off automatically after one hour, and the Infrared Breeze Air Styler Pro and SA Macho 2.0 also feature auto shut-off. Always unplug any hot tool when you finish styling.

Where should I rest my hot tool while styling?

Rest it on a heat-resistant surface. Our Heat Mat protects counters and wraps around your tool for travel, and the Pro Universal Holder is a heat-resistant, hands-free holder that attaches with suction cups.

Can I use a flat iron on wet hair?

No, flat irons and the Infrared Breeze are for dry hair only. To style from damp, use a tool designed for it, such as the Air Glide or one of our blow dryer brushes on towel-dried hair.
